Avoiding Skin Irritants After Chemo/Radiotherapy

Avoiding skin Irritants during chemo

One of the most common side-effects of chemo or radiotherapy is horribly uncomfortable and sensitive skin. If you’re undergoing this kind of treatment you can get sore areas, chemo and radio burns, or painfully dry lips, eyes or hands. You can also develop sensitivities to substances and ingredients that your skin might’ve been able to tolerate up until now.

Unfortunately, irritants can be found almost everywhere, but here’s a quick checklist of what you might need to look out for when you’re avoiding anything that could flare up sore skin.

Potential irritants in the home
Laundry detergents
Washing-up liquid
Household cleaning agents (floor and surface cleaners etc)
Dust/dust mite debris in carpets, throws etc.
Soap
Synthetic fabrics and cloths

Potential synthetic irritants in cosmetics and toiletries
fragrance/parfum/perfumes/scents
Parabens
Sulfates, including sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) in shampoos, bubble baths etc.
Methylisothiazolinone / Methylchloroisothiazolinone
Phenoxyethanol
PEGs (aka polyethylene glycol)
Glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and retinol
Colours
Alcohol

It’s generally a good rule of thumb to go for things that are as natural as possible when choosing both household cleaning products and skincare, as these usually contain fewer skin irritants. However, remember that some natural substances are also irritant, so take care over what’s in your face cream or shampoo: check ingredients lists and always patch test before widespread use!

Possible natural irritants in cosmetics and toiletries
Essential oils (particularly lemon, orange, mandarin, lemongrass, ylang-ylang, cinnamon)
Lanolin
Soya
Coconut
Dairy derivatives
Fish and shellfish derivatives
Nut oils
Gluten

Balmonds for sensitive skin

Luckily, you can avoid most of the above, in your skincare at least, by sticking to Balmonds! Although we use a few essential oils in some of our products, we don’t have any of the other nasties in our skincare.

Skin Salvation is a great moisturiser for sensitive chemo-affected skin, rich and nourishing for dryness and free from synthetics.
