The Best Skincare for Teenage Skin.

The skin undergoes significant changes in the teen years, with oiliness, breakouts, and acne becoming a source of discomfort and self-consciousness for many.

How to look after teen skin.

Looking after your skin during the teenage years can be a frustrating process. Ongoing hormonal changes trigger oiliness, inflammation, and breakouts, accompanied by a constant, confusing flood of recommendations from social media. It can be really hard to know what products to pick or what routine to follow.

Whether your skin is oily, dry, itchy, acne-prone or a combination of the above, the message for your teenage years is clear: keep it simple, keep it gentle.

Balmonds: Redefining Natural Skincare

We’re committed to doing skincare differently. Our range is fragrance-free as standard, we leave out problematic ingredients that trigger breakouts, and we ensure our products are safe and effective for teenage skin.

We’ve gathered advice, tips and a selection of simple, gentle, effective products to keep skin in the best condition possible through your teenage years.

Picking The Right Routine For Teen Skin.

Although social media is full of recommendations for different scientific-sounding viral ingredients each week, the fact is teenage skin just needs to be kept clean, nourished and hydrated. It rarely needs anything very complicated, and definitely needs to steer clear of harsh ingredients made to look after more mature skin.

Whether you’re battling eczema flare-ups, oiliness, psoriasis, or acne, the message is the same: a gentle cleansing and moisturising routine which avoids potentially irritating ingredients is what’s needed.

Pick products that will support your skin barrier function without clogging pores or irritating the skin. We’d recommend cleansing first with Tea Tree Facial Wash, following up with an application of Super 7 Serum, then finishing with a nourishing natural moisturiser; good options include Balmonds regenerative Omega-Rich Facial Oil or our gentle, unfragranced Daily Moisturiser cream.

The Challenging Teenage Years: How to Look After Your Skin

Teenage years are mortifying enough without outbreaks of acne and eczema to contend with, but unfortunately that is exactly what can happen when hormones are running riot.  Add the pressure young people are under to have flawless, dewy, Instagram-perfect skin to the mix and it’s not surprising that teens can feel awkward about their blemishes and outbreaks.

What’s Going on?

Hormonal changes mean that skin produces more sebum, the oily substance that can block pores and cause spots. Blocked pores can be vulnerable to bacteria and get infected, so it’s really important to keep skin as clean and healthy as possible.

As the production of oil and keratin increases, pores enlarge, and the skin barrier weakens, meaning skin gets spottier and more sensitive. So, in addition to keeping skin clean, you also need to treat your extra sensitive skin very carefully, rather than smothering it in heavy foundation and highly perfumed moisturisers or scouring it with soap and abrasive skin treatments.

Here are our tips for keeping teenage skin fresh, clean and healthy, with the extra plea to love the skin you’re in, whatever its appearance.

CLEANSE: Teenage skin can be prone to microbial overgrowth leading to blocked pores and inflamed spots; bacteria, mites and yeasts need to be kept at bay with effective but gentle cleaners.

HYDRATE: Even if your skin has oily areas, you still need to moisturise. You just need to find one that doesn’t flare up sensitivities or clog pores. Avoid dyes, perfumes, and harsh preservatives. Go for unperfumed moisturisers with a low comedogenic score instead.

LOVE THE SKIN YOU’RE IN: It might seem odd, but keeping your stress levels in check and your self-confidence high is super important for skin health. That can mean taking care of yourself in all sorts of ways, from drinking plenty of water and cutting out the sugar and additives to treating yourself with kindness and getting support if you’re feeling isolated or alone.

If you’re feeling low and need to talk to someone in confidence, Young Minds can help.

I was allergic to my first boyfriend. Not the kind of problem teenagers usually deal with, but I was, and it was awful. Every time I saw him, hugged him, or kissed him, I came away with a swollen, itchy face that no amount of lotions and potions would fix. At 17, I was advised by doctors to stop wearing makeup and use only sensitive skin moisturisers until I could have a patch test for allergies in eight months’ time.

The relationship didn’t last the eight months, but the eczema did. Needless to say, this was my worst teenage nightmare come to life. It meant that I had to think about a lot of things that none of my friends had to think about. But as soon as we identified the culprit causing my eczema and started treating it with products I wasn’t allergic to, it cleared up.
