Serious about our sustainability journey.
We make continual improvements to our business to tread as lightly on the earth as we can.
Our ingredients:
- Our beeswax is sourced locally to us (Sussex) and is unrefined and chemical-free
- Our oils (hemp, olive, sunflower, and safflower) are UK-processed to an organic standard. Growing hemp is good for the planet - it captures more carbon during its growth cycle than any other crop. One hectare removes 20 tonnes or carbon from the atmosphere!
- We source our shea from women’s cooperatives throughout Ghana, who gather and process the nuts into our beautiful shea butter. Our shea butter supplier has created job opportunities for 15,000 women in rural communities of West Africa
- Our infused oils are all organic and supplied from the UK
- Our herbal tinctures are grown and processed organically in the UK
- Any palm oil is sustainably sourced by suppliers accredited with the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO)
- We never use microbeads and only use ingredients that are safe for water systems, ocean ecosystems
Our packaging
- All our cartons and boxes are Forest Stewardship Council certified (FSC)
- We manufacture our fully recyclable glassware in the UK for a lower carbon footprint
- When we use Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic, we ensure at least 30% is Post Consumer Recycled material (PCR), and we have a timeline in place to reduce the use of all PET plastics and replace them with aluminium within 2025
- We use fully recyclable polypropylene plastics (PP) in our airless pumps
- We are in the process of withdrawing our mixed-material componentry from our packaging (i.e. parts of our bottles that are non-recyclable), replacing them with mono-material options, which will make all our packaging fully recyclable within 2025
Our business
- The energy we use is from renewable sources
- We manufacture all of our own products in small batches, which uses less energy and reduces any carbon footprint we would have produced by shipping large qualities of ready-made product from another manufacturing facility. It also ensures all our products are freshly made
- All our packaging waste is recycled where possible
- Balmonds HQ is located at Westergate Business Centre, which is a part of the East Brighton Trust: “We believe in a circular economy, which means income from rent paid to us goes back into supporting local groups and projects. This leads to a sustainable way of doing business, ensuring local organisations and those using their services benefit. Together, we’re not just helping to build successful businesses; we’re also building a strong community across the East Brighton area.”
- Balmonds supports the Brighton Living Wage Campaign which encourages local businesses to voluntarily pay all employees the real Living Wage instead of the government’s national minimum
