Can Perioral Dermatitis Get Better On Its Own?

Like other inflammatory conditions, perioral dermatitis tends to come and go in waves. Once you’ve got a propensity for flare-ups of the bumpy, pustular rash, it does tend to recur, but recurrences do depend on what particular things trigger it in the first place!

Perioral dermatitis usually affects women between 16-45, so for many people it does eventually go away as they get older. But that’s not much good if you’re looking at many years of the condition blighting your life.

Flares tend to have a natural cycle, with inflammation decreasing and sore skin recovering. A flare is likely to get better by itself eventually, with or without medical treatment, but it might take a while, and unless you know what caused it, you might suffer a new flare-up pretty soon afterwards.

The question is really whether or not what your skin is still affected by whatever caused it to react in the first place. So your number one priority is to identify your triggers and make changes.

If it’s an ingredient in your makeup or your topical medication that’s causing your skin to break out, once that trigger is removed, the perioral dermatitis should improve. If stress is exacerbating the condition, you’re more likely to suffer from prolonged flares, or not notice any gaps between them unless you find a way of managing the cause of your stress.

Take a look at our article Top 8 Triggers Of Perioral Dermatitis to see if any of them might apply to you, so that you can remove them from your life!

Although removing triggers will certainly help, it’s important to remember that you’re likely to be prone to breakouts of perioral dermatitis for a good long time, so treat your skin with great care. Looking after your skin and using skincare that will nourish and protect your skin rather than irritate it will mean fewer and shorter flares.
