Keratosis pilaris is a long-term skin condition that some people are more prone to than others. Here we look at what it is, and what you can do to manage it.
Keratosis pilaris is characterised by little bumps under the skin, typically affecting the upper arms, thighs, and buttocks. It’s sometimes known as ‘chicken skin’!
The little bumps don’t tend to be painful, although they can sometimes appear inflamed, and can feel dry and itchy. It’s actually the overproduction of keratin clogging up hair follicles that cause the bumps, although it’s unclear why it happens to some people and not others.
While there’s nothing you can do to ‘cure’ the condition, you can make it a bit easier on yourself by looking after the affected areas.
Here are three simple steps to keep your keratosis pilaris under control:
- Take a bath: use warm water and don’t stay in too long!
- Use a gentle, natural body scrub on your arms and thighs. A sugar-based one is ideal.
- Finish by patting your skin dry and gently rubbing in a natural emollient oil to soften the bumps and nourish the skin.
